History

  • With over 30 years of experience in international and local disputes boutiques and full-service firms, Carlo Verona holds an LLM in International Arbitration and Comparative Commercial Law from the University of London – Queen Mary and Westfield College (2007) and a JD from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) (1998).

Career

  • Carlo focuses his practice in dispute resolution on the areas of infrastructure, energy, mining, telecommunications and construction – including corporate disputes involving regulatory agencies;
  • Carlo also has expertise in international investigations related to anti-corruption and anti-money laundering;
  • In addition to being an Invited Professor and Senior Research Fellow in Ethics and Compliance of the PhD Program at the Fundação Getulio Vargas Business School, Carlo also acts in a number of important institutions, including:
  • Board Member of the Corporate Integrity Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC- Brasil);
  • Member of the panel of arbitrators of Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce Arbitration and Mediation Chamber, Câmara Brasileira de Mediação e Arbitragem (CAMARB), Arbitration and Mediation Center of the American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), and Centro Brasileiro de Mediação e Arbitragem (CBMA);
  • Carlo is an Associate to the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators CIARB (London Chapter).

Representative Matters

  • Represented a Luxury Hospitality Conglomerate in multiple class action defenses and negotiations of concession agreements and public-private partnerships with different States of the Brazilian Federation;
  • Represented an electromechanics consortium in a USD 2,5 billion construction arbitration before the Court of International Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce;
  • Assisted one of the largest global private equity funds in multiple court disputes and arbitrations related to the divestment of its position in an education conglomerate in Brazil;
  • Assisted a Multinational Pharmaceutical Company in the drafting of the regulatory non-fault compensation legal framework before the Brazilian House of Representatives and in the negotiation of a Purchase and Sale Agreement for the supply of Covid-19 vaccines to the Brazilian Ministry of Health;
  • Represented an Italian Civil Contractor in multiple arbitrations before the Arbitration Chamber of Commerce of Lima- Peru, and the in the enforcement of a Peruvian USD 100 million arbitral award against the largest Brazilian Infrastructure Conglomerate in the aftermath of Operation Carwash;
  • Assisted a member of the UAE royal family in a USD 2 billion construction arbitration arbitration before the Court of International Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce;
  • Assisted two Anglo-Autralian Mining Companies in an ICSID arbitration brought by an Asian Sovereign State.
